Charter of the values of La République des Cartes

1.A republic of shared knowledge and informed debate

Taking part in La République des Cartes means affirming that cartography is a tool for knowledge, dialogue and civic emancipation. Every project undertakes to promote an open and critical approach to how the world is represented - valuing a diversity of viewpoints, access to data for everyone, and transparency of sources. The map is a democratic lever: it lets us understand, debate, decide and act together in the face of the ecological, social, cultural and technological transitions of our time.

2.A republican and inclusive approach

Project leaders recognise in La République des Cartes the founding principles of the French Republic: freedom to create, equal access to knowledge, and fraternity in cooperation between actors. Initiatives must be non-discriminatory, accessible to all audiences, and respectful of the people and places they represent.

3.An ethic of responsibility and contribution

Committing to La République des Cartes also means adopting an ethic of responsibility: guaranteeing the reliability and free reuse of the data produced (while respecting rights and privacy), favouring digital sobriety, and encouraging cartographic commons. Participants undertake to keep these values alive through their projects, their practices and their collaborations, in a spirit of sharing, openness and public interest.

4.Terms of use for the teaching resources

The exhibition “The maps we need”, offered as a teaching resource and whose maps also serve the workshop “The maps we need”, is made available for activities held in the month before and the month after Map Day, within the framework of La République des Cartes (Map Day and associated activities), and for strictly non-commercial use. Any use outside that period, that context, or for commercial purposes requires prior express authorisation.
